So what is necessary to improve your presentation skills? Did you know that proper preparation is the keyword to successful presentation followed by talent, experience or knowledge? If you want to be a good presenter and develop your presentation skills: prepare, prepare and prepare. Thorough preparation is your answer to skilled presentation skills. So how do you prepare? Here are some tips that will definitely increase the effectiveness of the time you invest in preparation.
- Practice your presentation out loud.
Thinking about your presentation or tossing around with ideas the night before is not practice. There is a huge difference between thinking and actually articulating your thoughts so that it comes out constructively and coherently. If you don’t practice out loud when the time comes you might struggle to articulate your mentally, well rehearsed words. And to an audience, this only sounds like insufficient preparation.
- Practice in front of real people
Interacting with a live audience is very important to your practice regime. This way you’ll be able to rehearse your delivery but have the opportunity to understand and react to the silent messages of your audience about their understanding, likes and dislikes.
- The mirror is your best friend in preparation.
Even though you have practiced in front of a live audience, you still haven’t rehearsed in front of your greatest critic, yourself. The mirror is an excellent tool to evaluate your style, your mannerism and other weaknesses.
- Try to practice in a situation and venue similar to the actual audience venue. Research has indicated that by practicing in front of an audience and venue similar to that on the day of the actual presentation, your brain sends a message that you have been in this situation before and immediately relieves the tension. For example if you have to present in a large auditorium filled with a lot of people, find a similar room and get your friends and family to be your audience.
- Practice your presentation from beginning to end without stopping. When practicing do not start the presentation all over again if you have made a mistake. This way you prevent yourself from practicing and rounding off a good conclusion. Often times during presentations, people start hesitating and struggle to successfully deliver a conclusion because they’ve hardly practiced it. A strong, rehearsed close is second most important to a beginning that captures the attention of your audience.
- Practice with props. If you are presenting with visual aids like a PowerPoint slide show be sure to practice with your laptop and slides. Practicing with your visual aids will help prepare you for the things that inevitably go wrong and prevent unprofessional behaviour such as not knowing how to move to the next slide or change the view to a proper display.
- Do it one more time. Once you’ve delivered your presentation from beginning to end flawlessly, do it one more time to ensure that you weren’t just lucky. After this, practice your presentation five to 10 more times. Yes, that is how many times you have to deliver your presentation before you are fully and thoroughly prepared.
