How to manage your stress
Back to Articles
Stress isn’t always bad. If channelled correctly it can initiate change, help you focus on a specific task or provide the adrenalin to complete work deadlines. But if it is not managed correctly, it can cause toxins to build up in your body resulting in poor concentration, sleeplessness, fatigue, heart attacks and even eternal changes. In order to avoid this, you have to identify the stressors and channel them accordingly. Here are some stress management tips:
By taking a deep breath, you automatically release more oxygen into your body that instantaneously helps you relax. And remember to count to ten, this will give you some time to calm down and provide perspective on the situation than acting out immediately.
If it is possible take a short walk or if you are at work take a bathroom break or get some water. The moment you feel stressed, do something else instead of pining about what to do; it will change your focus and when you come back to the situation it will seem much more manageable.
So often in life we neglect the people and things that really matter because we don’t have time. But ironically, that is the one thing that we can control. We are given 24 hours a day and you are the only one that can manage your time. Take that time to recognise and enjoy the good things in life.
There are always two sides to a story and every issue has both advantages and disadvantages. Think the situation over, write down the pros and cons on a piece of paper and go sleep. Tomorrow morning, when reading what you’ve written down, the situation will not seem half that bad and you will be able to judge the situation more objectively.
- Every cloud has a silver lining
In nature, dark clouds and thunder often bring rain. Similarly, every bad situation does have some good to it or the potential to turn something bad into something good. Seek and you shall find.
As soon as people realise that it is ok to say now, a huge burden will be lifted off their shoulders. Also, you don’t have to explain to anyone why you’ve said no. It is your right to say yes or no.
Be honest with yourself. Lots of times things in life happen that we have no control over whatsoever. Learn to identify those things and make peace with it by stop blaming yourself.
There is no good reason why you should allow stress to steal your joy and your employees’ productivity at work. There will always be some level of stress at work but it is your decision how you are going to channel and manage it.
