Prepare yourself for a good Memory

It is said that knowledge is power. If you cannot remember this knowledge, you lose personal power in the form of confidence, self esteem and control. In the long run, it affects your business performance and relationships and the respect others have on you. Effective leaders have the facts on their fingertips. I hope you find these tips useful.

Nobody has a bad memory – only an untrained one.

Here are some tips to help you with your memory:

1.     Absorb and Review:

5 minutes after absorbing any information, review the main points you wish to remember. Repeat this after an hour.

2.     Create concept maps:
When studying confusing topics, focus on the main ideas and then expand into supporting facts or ideas.

3.     Remembering a person’s name:
When you meet a person for the first time, look them person in the face and make a conscious effort to focus on their features: face shape, nose, eye color, hair style or glasses. Link these features to this person’s name. Repeat their name 3 times (mentally and aloud within the conversation).

4.     Make up rhymes:
Just like at school, we remembered the times table by repetition and to that we added a rhyme. So we do the same to remember facts.

5.     Rely on all your senses:
To recall things: picture the information you wish to recall, raise your eyes to about 17°, verbalise it, hear it…remember it.

6.     Create associations:
The more ridiculous and absurd and exaggerated the association is, the easier it will be to remember. To remember a name, break it up into syllables and create a mental association for each syllable, e.g. Hamilton – break the name into syllables, ham, ill, ton – now create the association, a piece of ham that looks very off or ill, placed on a scale that indicates it weighs a ton.

7.     Speech Recall:

Write down the main points of your speech. For each point create a picture and draw each picture in a variety of colours next to the corresponding point. Now copy each picture in the same order as the points on a prompt card. Memorise the pictures, and you will be amazed how easy it is to give your speech without notes.

8.     Rehearse:

After writing the speech, stand up and present it out aloud as many times as you feel comfortable with the content. This helps to organise your thoughts and reinforce the material.

9.     Eat plenty of protein:
The evening prior to your presentation eat an adequate amount of protein. It is food for your brain - help it work at its best.

10. Be patient:
Breathe deeply and relax. Give your memory a chance. Tension affects your ability to recall.
